Points for honesty: a rough translation of the German word "
Brimborium
" is "a trifling little thing," or something of little intrinsic value. Boy, if there's a more on the nose description of a
KMFDM
remix album in 2008 than that, it's hard to imagine what it could be.
Brimborium
gathers remixes of songs from the industrial dance pioneers' 2007 album
Tohuvabohu
, itself not exactly one of the band's first-tier efforts. Oddly, however, these remixes -- mostly by name acts like
Die Krupps
,
Combichrist
, and
16Volt
, as well as efforts by bandmembers
Jules Hodgson
,
Sascha Konietzko
and
Steve White
-- take what had been
KMFDM
's most experimental and aggressive album in quite some time and turn its songs into nearly mainstream dance pop. The two takes on the single
"Looking For Strange"
are instructive: though the
Die Krupps
version more overtly moves things onto the club floor, placing the diva-style vocals front and center and focusing on the admittedly catchy chorus almost to the exclusion of the rest of the song, the "All Strung Up" mix by
Velox Music
just turns up a big fat (and ceaselessly unchanging) beat and filters out most of the rest of the mix so that the song sounds like it's coming from the next room even when played loudly. The final track,
"What We Do For You,"
is merely nine minutes' worth of voicemail messages left by fans on a special band phone number; most of them are so incoherent and banal that the mind boggles at what messages they might have left off. That's a fair assessment of this rather pointless time-filler as a whole. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
