Few bands could push it into the red zone like Uriah Heep, so who better to break the Eastern barrier and rock the Russians? Now digitally remastered with three bonus concert tracks, Live in Moscow is history in the re-making: a pristine, powerful performance of the first Western rock band to play Russia. It's an interesting way to break in a new band, but that's what Mick Box and company did when they asked vocalist Bernie Shaw and keyboardist Phil Lanzon to join them on a tour of Moscow. Although the band does showcase a few new tracks from Lanzon and Shaw ("Corina," "Mister Majestic," "Pacific Highway"), it's the classics that the Muscovites came to hear, and they're not disappointed. Shaw delivers the best version of "Bird of Prey" since David Byron, handles "Too Scared to Run" without a hitch, and makes "The Wizard" a magical experience. Of course, the trio of Bolder, Box, and Kerslake is as solid as a rock, while the crisp remastered sound breathes life into Mick's guitar solos. Of all Heep's live albums, Live in Moscow might be the most essential (it's head and shoulders above Live in Europe 1979), both for the performances on it and the history behind it. It's not a typical live performance; the sound is remarkably clean and the arrangements are economical, with no unnecessary solos or stage banter to stretch out the material (a ten-minute version of "July Morning" seems to fly by). It would have been nice if Ken Hensley could have come along for this historical ride, but this lineup of Heep does its predecessors proud. Live in Moscow is a must-own for Heep fans.
