Since its inception in 1993, Tooth & Nail Records has proven to be an oddly diverse label, flaunting a mix of alternative Christian music and the hard-hitting, secular sounds of emo, punk-pop, and revivalist ska. This 2008 compilation collects tracks from the label's 15-year history, from longstanding acts (MxPx, Starflyer 59) and Tooth & Nail alumni (Juliana Theory, Further Seems Forever) to such newer bands as Mae and Demon Hunter. It's a solid greatest-hits album for a variety of tastes, and the cohesive track list helps shine a light on Tooth & Nail's ability to interweave Christian and nonreligious themes throughout its roster. Seamless without being bland, spiritual without being preachy, and cathartic without being excessively dramatic, this Ultimate Collection is a nice retrospective release for those who follow the label's artists but don't wish to purchase Tooth & Nail's entire catalog. ~ Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide
